Volunteer Spotlight: Alyson Burton

viscom_portIn the weeks leading up to Website Weekend LA 2016, we’ll be shining the spotlight on some of the volunteers who will be donating their time and talent during the event to help build websites for local nonprofit organizations that are doing good in the community. Today, we meet Alyson Burton!

What’s your day job?

I currently work as Art Director of The Sundial, CSUN’s weekly newspaper

How will you be using your experience to help during Website Weekend?

I have previously worked and volunteered as a front-end developer for various non-profits and have experience project managing as well as content development and graphic design at The Sundial. Most of my work for the school has been low to no budget so we learn to wear several hats and develop a more rounded skill set.

What was your favorite project that you ever worked on?

Being that a lot of my work was under an NDA, its hard to say but basically we were going to build an app that would better prepare middle and high school students for college, help them see what classes they needed for their desired major and to help them graduate in 4 years rather than 6 or 8, which is the norm. The project was dropped mid-way though but I really enjoyed the creative process on that project, thinking back to what would have really helped us when we were younger and what designs would catch and maintain the attention of the youngest generation.

Why are you excited about Website Weekend?

I’m excited to work with a non-profit. I’ve previously worked with MEND for a class and really enjoyed helping an organization that helps so many people. Its a great way to do some good for an organization that otherwise wouldn’t have the budget for it, its a great learning experience, a chance to meet some awesome people and it’ll be a great portfolio piece.

What’s your favorite book, movie or tv show?

That’s a tough tie between Breaking Bad or American Horror Story, but I lean towards AHS, probably because there’s something wrong with me.

What’s your favorite color?

Teal, by far. Have you seen my hair??
