Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Straus
In the weeks leading up to Website Weekend LA 2016, we’ll be shining the spotlight on some of the volunteers who will be donating their time and talent during the event to help build websites for local nonprofit organizations that are doing good in the community. Today, we meet Karen Straus!
What’s your day job?
I’m a freelance marketing consultant and graphic designer. I especially love working with tech startups and non-profits. Learn more about me on LinkedIn.
How will you be using your experience to help during Website Weekend?
My wide ranging experience may all be tapped, from organizing website content and crafting key messages to designing the look/feel/imagery and building pages.
What was your favorite project that you ever worked on?
For several years, a partner and I served as the outsourced marketing department for a tech startup in Oakland, CA. Starting from nothing, we crafted their website (design and content), all of their print materials, and prepared them for their first trade show.
Why are you excited about Website Weekend?
I’m relatively new to SoCal, so I’m looking forward both to working with local colleagues and making a difference via the non-profits we assist.
What’s your favorite book, movie or tv show?
I read a lot, so it’s hard to name just one book, but among my favorites is “Crashing Through: The Extraordinary True Story of the Man Who Dared to See” by Robert Kurson, both for the spirited characters and the scientific insights.
What’s your favorite color?
Deep garnet red. (I even named my business for it: Garnet Creative.)
