Volunteer Spotlight: Sina Neda

sinanedaIn the weeks leading up to Website Weekend LA 2016, we’ll be shining the spotlight on some of the volunteers who will be donating their time and talent during the event to help build websites for local nonprofit organizations that are doing good in the community. Today, we meet Sina Neda!

What’s your day job?

I’m an engineer, working in Technical Operations at one of the leading upscale fashion retailers. We handle all the exciting technology that happens in the back-end after a customer click on the “Place Order” button on the website. We also build, enhance and modify the Warehouse Management System and Control Systems to make the operations work efficiently in our fulfillment centers. Ultimately, it involves miles of warehouse conveyors, millions of SKUs and a thrilling amount of database action.

How will you be using your experience to help during Website Weekend?

I started my career in Biotechnology in Sweden, where I grew up. While being a self-taught coder at a young age, I grew an interest for web and software development. This led me to start Sound4Sina in 2003, combining my interest for electronic music and web development. The website became the start to various other web related ventures and projects, where I developed and designed websites.

As a Project Manager during Website Weekend, I will bring my bag of tricks to drive the team to deliver a purposeful and well-thought-out website that represent the client and their vision, while planning so that every team member will have an opportunity to shine with the skill set they are bringing.

What was your favorite project that you ever worked on?

I wrote a sound modulation algorithm for electronic synthesizers back in college, involving creation of acoustic sounds from a monophonic sound sample. I started the project with an idea, but didn’t have all the necessary skills to execute the idea without finding people that could help me. A few years later, we had a community of people from around the world, helping me with the code and hardware integration.

I guess this was my first open source project.

Why are you excited about Website Weekend?

I enjoy building stuff, and giving back to the community.

What’s your favorite book, movie or tv show?

I’m a big fan of Dr. Michio Kaku’s books. He’s a futurist, and a realist. I also wish that Elon Musk could document his thoughts in the form of a book. I think he is a fascinating pragmatic polymath.

What’s your favorite color?

#e569d9, the color of the beautyberry 🙂
